What that means in practice
Orange rather than black, and the colour is the specification as much as the numbers are — across most of Europe orange or yellow on a buried pipe means gas. Bought for a water job it would pass every mechanical test and fail inspection.
If these numbers are not something you work with daily, our HDPE grades and pricing guide explains what they measure and how prime, off-spec, regrind and regranulate differ.
What to check before buying BorSafe HE3492-LS-H
- The classification is the specification: PE80, PE100 or PE100-RC, with the MRS figure attached. Two grades whose codes differ by one letter can be rated differently — BorSafe HE3490-LS is MRS 11.2 and HE3490-LS-H is MRS 10.0, and nothing on the sack will remind you.
- Colour is not cosmetic on pipe compound. Black is water and general pressure; orange and yellow mean gas across most of Europe. The wrong colour passes every mechanical test and fails inspection on site.
- For black grades, ask for the carbon black content and dispersion on the batch. That is what carries the UV life, and it is a batch property rather than something the grade name guarantees.
- If it is offered as off-spec or reprocessed, ask precisely what the deviation is. A compound that no longer meets its MRS rating is no longer the material the code names, whatever the paperwork says.
