ABS grades and pricing explained: impact, flow, plating and flame-retardant grades

ABS is specified by the impact-versus-flow trade-off, and recycled ABS carries a regulatory question most polymers do not. Here is what to check.

Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene is a terpolymer, and each of its three components does a job: acrylonitrile brings chemical and heat resistance, butadiene brings impact toughness, styrene brings rigidity, gloss and processability. Shifting the ratio shifts the grade, which is why ABS grades are described by the balance they strike rather than by a single number. This is a plain-English reference for buying and selling ABS, prime or recycled.

What are the main ABS grade types?

  • High-impact — more butadiene rubber, for parts that must survive knocks. Lower stiffness and gloss.
  • Medium-impact and general-purpose — the balanced workhorse for housings and enclosures.
  • High-flow — for large or thin-walled mouldings that need to fill easily; typically lower impact.
  • Heat-resistant — raised heat distortion temperature for automotive interior and appliance parts that see warmth.
  • Plating grade — formulated so the surface can be chemically etched and electroplated, common in automotive trim and sanitary ware.
  • Flame-retardant (FR) — meeting a stated flammability rating, historically often via brominated compounds.
  • ABS/PC blends — alloyed with polycarbonate for higher impact and heat performance; a distinct material, not ABS.

Melt flow for ABS is commonly quoted at 220°C under 10 kg, though other conditions appear. As with every polymer, the number without the condition is not a specification.

What should I check on recycled ABS?

Recycled ABS mostly originates from two very different places, and the distinction drives everything:

  • Post-industrial — sprues, runners, purgings and rejected mouldings from a known factory. Usually a single grade and colour, clean, and the easiest recycled ABS to buy with confidence.
  • Post-consumer WEEE — housings from electrical and electronic equipment. Mixed grades, mixed colours, and the stream where the regulatory question bites.

That question is brominated flame retardants. Older electronic housings can contain BFRs that are now restricted as persistent organic pollutants, and material above the regulatory threshold cannot lawfully be recycled into new product in the UK and EU — it must be routed to appropriate destruction. Reputable suppliers screen for it, typically by X-ray fluorescence for total bromine, with laboratory confirmation where the screen is borderline.

If you are buying recycled ABS of electronic origin, ask what screening was done and ask to see it. This is a legal compliance point rather than a quality preference, and it does not show up in a photograph.

What drives the price of ABS?

  • The styrene, butadiene and acrylonitrile feedstock markets, which move the virgin price that recycled tracks.
  • Grade type — plating, heat-resistant and FR grades price above general purpose, and ABS/PC blends above plain ABS.
  • Colour — natural and light colours above black and mixed, because they can be recoloured downstream.
  • Source and consistency — single-source post-industrial regrind above mixed post-consumer material, by a wide margin.
  • BFR screening and compliance documentation on WEEE-derived material.
  • Condition and form — pellet above regrind above unground parts.
  • Quantity, location and incoterm.

These move independently and the compliance dimension can override the technical one entirely. ABS is best priced against live offers of the same grade type, colour and provenance.
