Polymer grades explained: prime, near-prime, off-spec, regrind and recycled

Most polymer disputes are not about bad material. They are about two people using the same word to mean different things. Here is the grade language, defined precisely, for buyers and sellers anywhere in the world.

Ask five traders what near-prime means and you may get five answers. That ambiguity is expensive: it is the root of most rejected loads, most renegotiations and most relationships that quietly end after one deal. This guide defines each condition grade precisely, explains how the material comes to exist, and sets out what a seller should be able to evidence. It applies to every commodity polymer — PVC, HDPE, LDPE, LLDPE, PP, PET, PS, ABS — traded anywhere.

What does grade mean in polymer trading?

The word carries two different meanings, and confusing them causes real problems. The first is the manufacturer grade: the producer's own product designation, such as a PVC suspension resin at K67, or a PP homopolymer with a stated melt flow index. That describes what the material was engineered to be.

The second is the condition grade: prime, near-prime, off-spec, regrind or recycled. That describes the state the material is actually in now, relative to what it was meant to be. A load can be a premium manufacturer grade and still be off-spec condition. When a listing says grade, always establish which of the two is meant — a complete offer states both.

What is prime polymer?

Prime is first-quality virgin material that meets its producer datasheet in full. It is on-spec on every declared property, in original packaging, with production traceability intact. It commands the highest price because it carries the least uncertainty: you can plan a process around it without trialling it first.

For prime, the reasonable evidence is the producer technical datasheet plus batch or lot identification. If a seller offers prime but cannot identify the producer or the batch, the claim is weaker than the label suggests.

What is near-prime polymer?

Near-prime is virgin material that sits just outside prime for a reason that is usually documented and often trivial to the end use. It is the grade with the widest interpretation across the market, so it is the one to pin down hardest. Common causes:

  • A single declared property slightly outside the datasheet range, with every other property on-spec.
  • A wide-spec production run — material made to a looser tolerance, typically at line start-up or during a grade change.
  • Damaged, repacked or unbranded packaging, where the polymer itself is untouched.
  • Missing or incomplete documentation on otherwise on-spec material.
  • Aged stock that has passed a nominal shelf life without measurable degradation.

Near-prime is frequently the best value on the board — if the deviation is irrelevant to your process. The buyer question is never is it near-prime, it is near-prime in what respect. Ask the seller to name the deviation explicitly. A seller who can name it is selling you a known quantity; a seller who cannot is selling you a guess.

What is off-spec polymer?

Off-spec is virgin material that failed its intended specification on one or more properties. It is not waste and it is not necessarily poor material — it is material that missed a target, and the target may not be yours. Off-spec PP with an out-of-range melt flow index may be entirely serviceable for a moulder working to a different flow requirement.

The critical question is which property is off, and by how much. Colour and appearance deviations are often cosmetic; a contamination or gel issue is not. Off-spec should always come with a certificate of analysis for the actual batch, showing the measured values against the original specification, so you can judge the deviation against your own process rather than take a general reassurance.

What is regrind?

Regrind is material that has been mechanically ground for reprocessing — sprues, runners, purgings, rejected mouldings, pipe or profile offcuts. It has been through at least one heat history, which means some loss of molecular weight and mechanical properties relative to the virgin resin it came from.

Regrind quality is governed almost entirely by source discipline. Single-source regrind from one known production line, one polymer, one colour, is a predictable input that compounders use routinely. Mixed regrind from several sources is a different product with a different risk profile, whatever the price looks like. Ask what it was, where it came from, whether it is single-source, and what the particle size and contamination control are.

What is recycled polymer, and what do PIR and PCR mean?

Recycled polymer is reprocessed material recovered from the waste stream and returned to usable form, usually as pellets or flakes. Two abbreviations do most of the work:

  • PIR — post-industrial recyclate. Recovered from manufacturing before it ever reached a consumer. Cleaner, better characterised, more consistent, and close to regrind in behaviour.
  • PCR — post-consumer recyclate. Recovered after consumer use. More variable in colour, contamination and heat history, and the grade where verification matters most.

PCR carries regulatory and commercial weight that the other grades do not: recycled-content targets, packaging rules and brand commitments all drive demand for it specifically. That makes documented recycled content valuable in its own right — but it also means claims about it deserve evidence. For food-contact or regulated applications, the relevant approvals are not optional extras, they are the product.

How do the grades compare on price?

The ordering is consistent everywhere: prime sits at the top, near-prime just below it, then off-spec, then regrind and recycled — with well-sorted single-source PIR often trading above mixed or heavily contaminated PCR. Two grades are not a fixed distance apart, though.

The discount to prime widens and narrows with the virgin resin market, regional supply, freight and the specific defect. When virgin is tight, off-spec and recycled compress upward as buyers substitute; when virgin is long, the gap opens again. Recycled is the exception that can invert the logic — where recycled-content rules bite, documented PCR sometimes trades at a premium to virgin. Any percentage rule of thumb you are quoted is a snapshot, not a law. Price against live offers on the day rather than a remembered differential.

Which grade should I buy for my application?

Work backwards from what your process cannot tolerate rather than from the label:

  • Regulated, food-contact, medical or high-specification technical parts — prime, with full traceability. The saving on anything else is not worth the qualification risk.
  • Demanding but unregulated production where one property has headroom — near-prime or off-spec, once you have matched the specific deviation against your tolerance.
  • Compounding and blending, where you are already correcting properties — off-spec, regrind and PIR, judged on consistency of supply as much as on the material.
  • Non-critical, thick-walled or hidden components, and applications where appearance does not matter — regrind and recycled, with a sample first.
  • Anything carrying a recycled-content commitment — documented PCR, where the certification is as much the point as the polymer.

What documents prove the grade?

Grade is a claim until something evidences it. What to ask for, in rough order of weight:

  • Certificate of analysis (COA) for the actual batch — measured values, not the generic range. This is the strongest single document, and the one that turns off-spec from a gamble into a decision.
  • Technical datasheet (TDS) — what the material was engineered to be. Necessary context, but it describes the intended product, not the load in front of you.
  • Batch, lot or production identification, and the producer name where it can be disclosed.
  • A representative sample for anything below near-prime. For regrind and recycled it is close to mandatory — no document substitutes for running the material.
  • Photographs of the actual stock and packaging, not stock imagery.
  • Recycled-content or food-contact certification where the application requires it.

A seller who supplies these without being pressed is telling you something useful about how they trade, quite apart from the paperwork itself.

What are the common grade disputes, and how do I avoid them?

Nearly all of them are language problems that hardened into money problems:

  • Near-prime meaning different things to each side — fix it by naming the specific deviation in the written terms, not the word alone.
  • Regrind sold as near-prime — heat history is the dividing line. Virgin material that has never been reprocessed is not regrind; reprocessed material is not near-prime, however clean.
  • Off-spec accepted without knowing which property failed — always get the COA before committing, not after arrival.
  • Mixed-source regrind supplied against a single-source expectation — specify single-source explicitly if that is what you need.
  • Recycled content claimed without certification — if the claim has commercial or regulatory value to you, require the document that carries it.
  • Colour, odour and appearance assumed rather than agreed — cheap to specify in advance, expensive to argue about on arrival.
